Number of Women Physicians Grows
Nearly half the physician fraternity in the country is comprised of women.
“The government prioritized gender equality, and currently 49% of the doctors in Iran are women,” said Vice President for Women and Family Affairs Shahindokht Molaverdi, at the second congress of Development of Economic Relations in the Health Field with Focus on Islamic Countries.
A number of well-paying healthcare jobs feature high concentrations of women. More than 90% of nursing practitioners and almost half of the general physicians from the over 140,000 general and specialized physicians in the country are women.
Molaverdi said 53% of female students in Iran study medicine-related majors, and about 23% of female graduates in medical fields hold specialties and 27%, subspecialties. Over 450,000 female health experts (such as nutritionists) and nurses are operating under the national healthcare system, Mehr News Agency reported.
“There has been a remarkable increase in the number of female physicians over the past four years: 300% increase in the number of female general physicians, 99% in gynecologists, and 40% in other specialties,” she added.
The congress held February 23-25 aimed to introduce the capacities in Iran’s health sector as well as recent advancements, including in medicine, pharmaceutical industry, treatment methods, equipment and machinery, as well as traditional medicine.
It also sought to provide the best platform to introduce the unique capabilities and potentials in the field of health in Islamic countries as well as promoting health economics and technology.
Some of the other goals of the congress were to create an integrated network of healthcare activists in Islamic countries for joint cooperation; analyze challenges and problems in the field; and to define the necessary infrastructure and common goals in the health sector by taking advantage of religious, social, economic and cultural commonalities of Muslim nations.
Health tourism, healthy lifestyle (environment, nutrition and exercise), traditional medicine and medicinal herbs, insurance, public healthcare services, medications and medical equipment and development of academic and technological relations, were among topics discussed at the meet.
